Reseach topics

[data traffic analysis, anomaly detection, robust estimation] I started my research career in the topic of signal processing for networks, in particular traffic analysis and anomaly detection in cellular networks [J1, J2], with connections to the problem of resource allocation [J3, C11] and key performance indicator (KPI) robust estimation [J12]. This has been the main topic of my PhD [see especially J7, about the merging of the general non-parametric tool of Maximum Entropy learning with formal hypothesis testing (GLRT), and also B1-B2, C3-C4].


[software-defined radio, elliptical normal distribution] Other early work are about experimentation with software-defined radio [C8, J5] and, on the theoretical side, practical formulas for approximating the value of any-order moments of elliptical normal distributions [J8].


[localization, TOA, RSS, AOA, cognitive/adaptive algorithms] I worked on the problem of localization based on power (RSS) and time (TOA/TDOA) measurements since 2010 [C7, C12]. For this problem I addressed less-investigated aspects such as interaction between automatic channel parameter estimation and ranging [J4]. I extended classical models in various directions: [J9] considers cooperation and signals of opportunity; [J10] adopts a Bayesian prior on the inter-node range distribution; [C29, J13] solve more general cases through a cognitive approach that is able to choose the most suitable algorithm according to the sensed environment; [J24, J28] explore array processing (AOA) for improved localization/tracking in mobile environments, and [A5] is a recent extension to dense-multipath environments; [J27] develops a hybrid TOA/RSS range estimator in closed-form.

After my PhD degree (2011) I started to work on diverse topics that I deemed interesting and important for emerging or futuristic interconnected contexts, trying to blend methodologies from different domains. This multifaceted research approach is reflected in the heterogeneity of my publication list.


[distributed estimation and learning over (ad-hoc, sensor, cyber-physical, social, neural) networks/graphs, Empirical Bayes] An original research direction I autonomously developed is the adoption of Empirical Bayes approaches in network contexts, in particular for the sake of robust estimation in non-homogeneous scenarios [J21]. I investigated Empirical Bayes in other settings, for which [J18] is a significant achievement: it shows how this approach can serve also as regularization tool, outperforming MMSE in terms of the natural metric on the covariance matrix Riemannian manifold.
I established interdisciplinary collaborations on the topic of distributed estimation and learning over networks, which lies at the boundary between signal processing, theoretical physics, and automatic control [C17, C20, J20] (a different collaboration
with physicists is [J16]). Recent advances on this topic are about distributed learning from interactions in cyber-physical and social networks [C35, A4, A2] and an Empirical Bayes approach for distributed estimation of spatial fields [C36, A3].


[radar detection, statistical signal processing, multichannel and array processing, beamforming, tracking] I tried to bring some ideas from network contexts also to more classical array processing topics, e.g. radar detection. In [J15] a cooperative multi-receiver approach is developed, with an additional feature that is an important novelty in the literature of selective receivers: a probabilistic relaxation of the fictitious signal (orthogonal to the steering vector), which according to the ABORT (adaptive beamformer orthogonal rejection test) approach is put under the null hypothesis for improving the selectivity under mismatch conditions. The nice result is a novel family of receivers able to sweep continuously between the GLRT detector (based on the conventional signal vs. noise-only test) and the plain ABORT, providing a palette of different detection rate-vs-selectivity trade-off [J14]. A different probabilistic relaxation that is linked to this idea has been developed in [J23] and [J25], which generalize to random signals the celebrated Kelly's detector for both point-like and distributed targets. Bayesian versions of the ABORT approach have been derived and analyzed in [J19]. The novel idea of introducing an additional random signal under the H1 hypothesis to model mismatches, so as to introduce a degree of robustness into the detector, has been recently presented at [C34] and an extended version is under review for IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing.
